March 27th Newsletter

Chick Embryology Unit
       We will begin our “Chick Unit” the week of April 20.  We will have eggs incubating in our room from April 21st until they hatch approximately 21 days later on May 12.  This is an exciting unit for the children. You will be amazed at how much they learn about chickens. Please remember to ask your child what he/she learned each day. Some of our projects will be available for you to see at our Open House on Thursday, April 23. 





Book-It Reading Incentive Program
     March was the last month that the children will receive a pizza coupon for returning their monthly reading chart. The Book-It program technically ends at the end of March.   We will still be sending an April & May calendar home to record what books the children have read.  Keep on reading!




     Our musical was a great success as always!  Thank you to Ms. Wyse for putting in a lot of time (and patience) into this performance.  The children did a great job also! I loved seeing all the creative hats!




Reading
             This week we read the fable, The Fox and the Grapes. We continued to compare and contrast fables and also entered our vocabulary words into our vocabulary booklets.
          The vocabulary words for this week were:  bunch, juicy, lunged, pluck, ripe

Phonics Skills
   We will work on the /oi/ sound.

Grammar Skills
     We will work on using adverbs correctly.

Spelling Words
    The spelling words for next week are: bug, had, film, oil, coin, noisy, spoiled, would, right, boiling






Author of the Month
            Mary Jane Auch is our new author for the month of April.  Many of her books, such as Chickerella, Peeping Beauty, & The Princess and the Pizza, are based around fairy tales.  We will be comparing these stories to the original fairy tales that they are based upon.

Silvana will be our “student of the week” for the week of March 23-27.






S.C.A.R.C.E Papermaking Assembly
          On Friday, March 6, several people from SCARCE came to our school to talk with the first graders about the 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle.  They did a papermaking activity with the children and also showed them many items that have been made out of recycled materials.  Ask your child to tell you about it, if he/she didn’t do so already.
         

First Grade Music Concert
     Our 1st grade musical, HATS will be on Thursday, March 26th at 7:00 pm in the Lakeview Junior High gymnasium.  Students should arrive at 6:45 pm and meet their teacher in the auxiliary gym. Thanks.



Reading
            This week we read the fable, The Lion and the Mouse. We continued to work on the elements of a fable and comparing/contrasting.
          The vocabulary words for this story were: timid, haste, toiled, gnawed, repay

Comprehension Strategies
          We have been focusing on reading fluently.  Each child received two “You Read to Me, I’ll Read to You” books – one which deals with fairy tales and the other one deals with fables.  These books have short stories that are meant to be read with a partner.  The children have been practicing reading these stories during Daily 5 centers.

Phonics Skills
   We will work on the /ow/ sound. We will discuss the prefixes un- & re-, and will review sounds for y.

Grammar Skills
     We will review verbs.

Spelling Words

    The spelling words for next week are: big, milk, owl, town, fox, how, brown, could, should, flowerpot

March 13th Newsletter

Math
   We just finished Topic 11 which dealt with subtracting tens from a two-digit number, such as,  70-20=50.  On Thursday, we will be starting Topic 12, which focuses on measurement.




      Salman will be the “student of the week “ next week.





Reading
This week we read the fable of The Tortoise and the Hare.  We discussed the elements of a fable (characters, problem, and moral/lesson) and wrote them on a chart.  We also compared this fable to The Ugly Duckling.
          The vocabulary words for this story were:
 boast, dart, contempt, plod, and steady



Comprehension Skills
          For the month of March we are focusing on visualizing skills.  We read the poem called, “My Neighbor’s Dog is Purple” and drew a picture half-way through the story, and then again at the end.  They shared their pictures with the rest of the class.  It was very interesting.



Phonics Skills
          We will be learning about the /ou/ sound.  We will also review base words and the endings –ed and –ing.


Grammar Skills
We will be reviewing alphabetical order.


Spelling Words
The spelling words for next week are:

Bat, pet, self, out, our, round, mouth, saw, put, outside

First Grade Music Concert

Computers
   Since March 2nd was Dr. Suess’ birthday, we explored his official website, www.seussville.com, during computer time.  You may access this website at home also.  There are many activities for the children to explore on this site.  They really enjoyed it.




     Remember to change your clocks this weekend and also the batteries in your smoke detectors.





Reading
            In this unit we will be reading fairy tales and fables. This week we read The Boy Who Cried Wolf.  We worked on visualizing and also comparing this story to the story of Chicken Little.
          The vocabulary words for this week were:  prank, shepherd, company, tended, and startled

Comprehension Strategies
   The following comprehension strategies will be covered next week: comparing/contrasting and visualizing

Phonics Skills
    We will work on base words and endings, the vowel pair “ew”” and syllabication (VCCV Pattern).

Grammar Lesson
We will work on compound words.

Spelling Words
     Our spelling words will be:
Bud, sun, held, few, flew, grew, chew, because, want, newspaper
